Sometimes the properties we shoot for our hotel photography are more challenging than others. That was certainly the case with the Drury Plaza Hotel – San Antonio Riverwalk. This hotel was originally a bank and the renovation is amazing. We worked our tail off to get the photo shoot done but in the end, we were so pleased with the results.
The biggest challenge for photographing this hotel was the enormous lobby! The dining area overlooks the lobby and being a busy downtown hotel meant that finding a time to shoot it without people was quite difficult. There is a gorgeous stained glass window that we wanted to be sure to capture so it was crucial that we shot it during daytime hours. It truly took a team effort but we were able to shoot it in the early afternoon between check out and check ins.
In addition to having 40 plus different guest room types, the hotel also has tons of meeting rooms. They wanted to stage each room in different set ups so that their sales team would be able to show prospective groups the many options they had. This also required an army of people to turn the rooms in the time frame we had to shoot. One of our favorite set ups they choose was the pre function space outside of the river front meeting room. They set up the space with traditional San Antonio Fiesta decor. It was beautiful but being on the Riverwalk meant that we had to wait for tourists to mosey out of our shots!
Perhaps our favorite part of the hotel was the rooftop pool which overlooks downtown San Antonio. More than any other hotel chain we photograph, Drury’s guests use their pools from the minute they open to the minute they close. We wanted to capture the photos as the sun was coming up so we were at the pool before sunrise. The first day we had fog so we tried again on the second day and nailed it.
This was one hotel photo shoot where our teamwork was crucial. Greg and I have different roles – I work with the onsite team to prepare each are for photos and Greg comes behind me to take the shots. With this many rooms, meeting rooms, common areas and amenities, we were leap frogging the entire day. There is no way that we could have completed this shoot without the outstanding team at the hotel.
Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the hotel photography a resounding success!
